Sgt. Hoffman joined the Marine Corps during his senior year of high school from Middletown High School South in Middletown, New Jersey, upon graduating Middletown he left for MCRD Parris Island, SC.
Sgt. Hoffman graduated boot camp October 2008 at the rank of Private and was then sent to the School of Infantry at Camp Geiger N.C., Upon graduating the School of Infantry, Corporal Hoffman was ordered to report to 3rd Battalion Sixth Marine Regiment at Camp Lejeune, NC and was soon promoted to Private First Class.
While assigned to 3rd Battalion 6th Marines, Sgt. Hoffman Participated in fourteen months of rigorous pre-deployment training to prepare for a deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
During this fourteen month period Sgt. Hoffman was promoted to Lance Corporal and attended various Division run courses as well as Battalion and Company supported Schools and Courses.
These courses include the Basic Aircraft Ditching Course, Battalion Fire Team Leaders Course, Combat Marksmanship Coaches Course as well as multiple Battalion Field Operations to Camp Dawson West Virginia, Fort A.P.Hill Virginia, And the Enhanced Mojave Viper training evolution at Camp Pendleton California.
In Jan of 2010, Sgt.l Hoffman deployed to Afghanistan with 3rd Battalion 6th Marines as a machine gun team leader in support of Combat Operations in the southern Helmand province, after Kilo Company established a Combat Outpost in Marjah at COP Reilly Sgt. Hoffman was pulled from his squad and platoon to be a Squad Leader in the company’s truck section.
On March 29 while conducting a resupply mission to the Battalions COP, Sgt.l Hoffman’s vehicle struck a 300lb IED. The blast threw him from the turret on the roof of his vehicle back in to the road. He was medically evacuated to Landsthul, Germany where he underwent multiple surgeries to repair damage to his spine and spinal cord, as well as his jaw. Sgt. Hoffman suffered numerous injuries to his lower extremities to include Tibia, Fibia fracture in his left leg, a fracture in his left knee, multiple fractures in his left hip and sacrum and pelvic. He also sustained severe ligament damage to both knees requiring multiple surgeries for repair. Sgt. Hoffman also suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury in the Explosion.
Sgt. Hoffman is now stationed at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center at Bethesda where he undergoes surgeries and physical therapy. While at Walter Reed was promoted to the rank of Corporal in December of 2011 and subsequently attended and graduated the Staff Non-Commissioned Officers Academy Corporals Course, completing the course with a 95% grade average. He also completed the Sgts Distance Learning Career Course .
Sgt. Hoffman enjoys the outdoors, Hunting and Shooting sports, fishing, offroading, watching Redskins and Nationals Games, boating and going to the beach when home in Sea Bright as well as running First Aid Calls with Sea Bright First Aid Squad and Driving the trucks for Sea Bright Fire Dept, Sgt.Hoffman has also recently started SCUBA Certification lessons.
Sgt. Hoffman’s personal awards include, the Purple Heart Medal, Combat Action Ribbon ,Presidential Unit Citation , Navy Unit Citation,Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and the Nato-ISAF Medal .
